The vast majority of the accounts of the Mexican-American War are written by the most educated group of the war, the American officers. Normally these journals or collections of letters tend to rail against the Mexican people-how they live, what they eat, how they dress and mostly against their religion especially the Catholic priests. Essentially they accuse the Mexicans of being a sub-human race while the superiority of the average American is without question.Anderson provides a fresh perspective in that he tends to judge things on their own merits. He gives recognition to those items in Mexican culture and society that are noteworthy while not stereotyping all Mexicans based on a few experiences. His eye for detail or such things as the country side, housing, farms, the open markets, how goods are carried by individuals is captivating. Anderson is extremely interested in the fruits and vegetables he comes across and packs seeds of the varieties that do not exist in the USA.
The book is a collection of his letters to his wife running from his departure of his post in Tampa Bay to his release from active service in Mexico due to a wound at Molino Del Rey. Anderson calls his letters "conversations" with his wife. HIGHLY recommend to anyone with any interest in the Mexico of this era and the American Campaign in Central Mexico.
